| While some students come to college
with a particular major in mind, others arrive open to any and all
possibilities. In fact, changing majors once or twice during college
is quite common. Sometimes, it is even necessary to change a major
- either because you are not doing well academically, or because
you simply do not enjoy the content of the discipline.
Choosing a major should be based on your perceptions of what you
would enjoy learning more about. A career counselor can help you
in this assessment of yourself. Then, you can work together to explore
majors that are a "good fit".
It is important to understand that your major does not determine
your career. Many people with very successful careers are working
in areas that have no relation to their undergraduate major. Your
career services office can provide you with assistance in exploring
all the career possibilities available to you upon graduation.
For assistance in choosing your major, please contact a career
counselor at the career services
office in your college.
